Historical manmade and natural disasters have left us a legacy of knowledge regarding how to manage, mitigate against or avert similar disasters today. That knowledge is available so that we may learn, adapt, adjust and become more resilient the next time disaster strikes our communities. Understanding the nature of the disaster is vital to managing the medical needs of a disaster. Disaster medicine is a key component to any comprehensive disaster response.
